    lost

Just finished watching Lost In La Mancha, the documentary of Terry Gilliam's infamous failed attempt to film 'Don Quixote'.

So painful to see! So many beautiful ideas, performances, costumes, concepts, all eventually coalescing into, not an actual finished product, just a quick documentary about a movie that could have been but wasn't. Oh yeah, and a six minute youtube video.

The whole way through I was thinking "just take it easy, Terry, one step at a time, tone it down, don't overreach, you can do it." Just like any movie where you know the ending, but root for the good guy anyhow.

    Tony Grisoni, co-writer:

"In the book, Cervantes does something very strange and very cruel. At every turn, Cervantes mocks Quixote. At every turn, Cervantes goes out of his way to show how foolish the old man is. And the crueler he is, the more we love Quixote. So that when this man becomes sane at the end, as a reader, we can't stand this, we don't want him to be sane, we want him to remain mad, because we know full well that when he's sane he will die...

Terry's very good at being proud of how possible something might be. But nobody's going to start a picture thinking `you know we may not ever get through this.` It was very painful to see it all come horribly true. Like I say, the most painful thing was seeing reality win over Don Quixote in the end. Cause it did.

Bush: "It's in Saudi's interest, it's in Jordan's interest, it's in the Gulf Coast countries' interest that there be a stable Iran, an Iran that is capable of rejecting Iranian influence."

    Disarray
The air in this house seems to all be connected. When I turn on the fan in my third-story bedroom, the first floor gets cooler. When my housemate showers in the second-story bathroom, my bedroom suddenly smells like all-natural shampoo product.

The humidity here is lovely. It's like swimming in my clothes everywhere I go.

DC is full of unexpected bridges. I walk along basically level ground and suddenly am hundreds of feet above a river or a park. Or another bridge. The city must have been built over a series of weird interlocking cliffs, like Arizona or a videogame.

    The Rules:
    1. Grab the nearest book.
    2. Open the book to page 23.
    3. Find the fifth sentence.
    4. Post the text of the sentence in your journal along with these instructions

"When there are no additional filenames to be returned, the filename glob returns an empty string."

    Boy, is that depressing.
